Alleged Coup Plot: I Begged Abacha Not to Execute Obasanjo in 1995 – Gowon

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has made a startling revelation about his role in saving the life of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1995. According to Gowon, he personally begged the late General Sani Abacha not to execute Obasanjo, who was accused of being part of a planned coup to overthrow Abacha's government ¹.

Gowon made this disclosure at the first edition of the Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organised by the Plateau Government. The event, which was attended by Obasanjo himself, provided a platform for Gowon to share his experience and express his gratitude that Obasanjo was eventually released from prison ¹.

Obasanjo's Ordeal

In 1995, Obasanjo was arrested and convicted of being part of a planned coup to overthrow Abacha's government. He was sentenced to death, but fortunately, his life was spared thanks to Gowon's intervention ¹.

Gowon's Plea

Gowon revealed that he wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading with him to spare Obasanjo's life. He sent his wife with the letter to Abacha in Abuja, begging him not to execute Obasanjo ¹.

"I wrote a letter to Abacha, I pleaded with him that God made him a leader to do good and not evil," Gowon said. "I sent my wife with the letter in the middle of the night to Abacha in Abuja; I pleaded with him that such a thing should not happen" ¹.

A New Chapter

Gowon's intervention marked a new chapter in Obasanjo's life. After spending three years in prison, Obasanjo was released in 1998 following Abacha's death. He later became the President of Nigeria in 1999, a position he held until 2007 ¹.

Gowon's Reflections

Gowon reflected on the experience, expressing his gratitude that Obasanjo was eventually released from prison. He attributed the positive outcome to prayers and sincerity ¹.

"This is something that only prayers and sincerity can do; I'm happy that today myself and Obasanjo are here to celebrate the unity of Plateau," Gowon said ¹.

The Significance of Gowon's Revelation

Gowon's revelation highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics and the importance of personal relationships in shaping the country's history. It also underscores the significance of forgiveness and reconciliation in promoting national unity ¹.

In conclusion, Gowon's intervention in saving Obasanjo's life is a testament to the power of compassion and forgiveness. As Nigeria continues to navigate its complex political landscape, this story serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in promoting national unity.
