Delta State Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are at odds over the rehabilitation of federal roads in the state. The disagreement stems from conflicting claims over who should be responsible for maintaining federal roads, with the state government insisting that the federal government should take responsibility ¹.
According to Delta State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the state government has been intervening in the rehabilitation of federal roads to ensure that residents have access to good roads. Aniagwu cited the example of the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway, which is a federal road but was constructed by the state government ¹.
On the other hand, the NDDC has been seeking partnership with the Delta State Government to develop the Niger Delta region. The commission's managing director, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, has been engaging with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to discuss areas of collaboration ².
However, the Delta State Government has petitioned the federal government over attempts by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to claim credit for the rehabilitation of the Bedesiegha bridge, which was actually done by the state government ³.
The dispute highlights the challenges of coordinating development efforts in the Niger Delta region, where multiple stakeholders are involved. As Governor Oborevwori noted, effective partnership and coordination are crucial to delivering sustainable development projects that benefit the people of the region ²
