US tariffs: South Korean minister heads to Washington, seeks exemption

South Korea's Industry Minister, Ahn Duk-geun, is heading to Washington, D.C. to plead for an exemption from U.S. steel tariffs. This visit, scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, aims to persuade the U.S. government to grant South Korea a waiver from the tariffs ¹.

The move comes as South Korea seeks to protect its businesses from the tariffs' impact. Deputy Trade Minister Park Jong-won previously led a delegation to Washington, emphasizing South Korea's investments in the U.S. and its support for U.S. economic goals ².

South Korea has argued that it should be exempt from the tariffs due to its existing free trade agreement with the U.S. and its significant investments in the country. In 2023, South Korea contributed to over 20,000 U.S. jobs, making it a crucial partner for the U.S. economy ².

During his visit, Minister Ahn Duk-geun is expected to discuss ways to boost cooperation in energy and shipbuilding, in addition to seeking a tariff exemption. The outcome of this visit will be crucial in determining the future of U.S.-South Korea trade relations ¹.
