Windstorm Devastates Yobe State, Kills 4 and Destroys 1,637 Houses

A severe windstorm accompanied by torrential rainfall has struck Yobe State, resulting in the deaths of four people and destruction of 1,637 mud houses since May 9. The disaster affected seven local government areas, including Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Gulani, Potiskum, and Tarmuwa.

Impact of the Disaster
- *Humanitarian Crisis:* The windstorm affected 5,022 individuals across 1,264 households, with 92 people sustaining varying degrees of injuries. A total of 83 households, comprising 368 individuals, were displaced by the disaster.
- *Destruction:* The windstorm destroyed 1,637 mud houses, leaving many families without shelter. Fika was the worst-hit, with 48 communities affected.

Response Efforts
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has taken steps to mitigate the effects of the disaster. In partnership with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and with support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), YOSEMA distributed life-saving relief materials to 566 households in Fika and Potiskum. ACF is also preparing to roll out Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) support to enhance the recovery of affected households ¹.
