Lagos Begins Eight-Month Rehabilitation of Iju and Adiyan Water Plants

Lagos State has kicked off a major eight-month rehabilitation project to revamp the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants, aiming to boost efficiency and expand access to clean drinking water for millions of residents. The project, announced by the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) on February 3, 2026, at its Ijora headquarters, is a key part of the state's five-year strategic business plan to renew aging infrastructure and improve service delivery ¹ ² ³.

The work focuses on the Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station, involving critical pump replacements and upgrades. It is fully funded by the Lagos State Government and is scheduled to run from February to October 2026. The Iju plant, one of the oldest in Lagos, dates back to colonial times and currently produces about 45 million gallons per day (MGD), while Adiyan, commissioned in 1991, can produce up to 70 MGD. The rehabilitation aims to increase production capacity, improve reliability, and ensure more consistent potable water access across Lagos [1
