The Nigeria Police Force has returned $23,000 to a victim of an international romance scam in the Cayman Islands. The money was recovered from Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, a Nigerian national who allegedly defrauded the victim through an online romance scheme. The INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja collaborated with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service to investigate and recover the stolen funds ¹ ² ³.
According to the police, Ikenna was arrested and the money was recovered in full. The funds were formally handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service through the British High Commission in Abuja, represented by Mr. Shaun McLeary, for onward transmission to the victim. Ikenna will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the investigation ¹ ⁴.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to intelligence-driven policing, international cooperation, and disrupting transnational cybercrime networks. "The Force remains resolute in ensuring that proceeds of crime are traced, recovered, and returned to victims, while offenders are identified and brought to justice in line with applicable laws and international best practices," said Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer ² ⁵.
