Mass resignation has hit Governor Monday Okpebholo's cabinet in Edo State, with several commissioners and appointees stepping down to contest in the 2027 general elections. Among those who resigned are Dr. Washington Osifo, Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation; Dr. Lucky Eseigbe, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development; Bar. Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC); and Pius Alile, Deputy Chief of Staff to the State Deputy Governor ¹.
The resignations follow a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, directing all political appointees and civil servants aspiring to contest in the 2027 elections to resign immediately. The move is in compliance with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which requires holders of executive positions to resign before contesting in elections.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier vowed to resign if President Bola Tinubu fails to win Edo State in the 2027 presidential election, citing the developmental projects carried out in the state with federal support as a guarantee of Tinubu's victory ² ³ ⁴.
