The United States has deployed MQ-9 Reaper drones and approximately 200 troops to Nigeria to support the country's fight against Islamist militants. The deployment, requested by Nigerian authorities, focuses on intelligence gathering and training support, with no American personnel involved in frontline combat or drone strike missions.
According to reports, the drones and troops are operating from Bauchi airfield in northeastern Nigeria, enhancing the Nigerian military's ability to detect, track, and disrupt terrorist activities. Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, emphasized that the partnership aims to improve intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and overall effectiveness against violent extremist organizations ¹ ² ³.
The deployment follows recent attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), highlighting the persistent threat to Nigeria's security. The US military previously operated a drone base in neighboring Niger but closed it in 2024 after the ruling junta requested their departure.
