A somber verdict has been delivered in Anambra State as Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr. was sentenced to death by hanging for the killing of his father, Ifeanyi Anizoba. The Anambra State High Court in Awka reached the decision after a trial that examined the tragic circumstances surrounding the father's death.
**The Crime:**
The incident occurred on December 24, 2019, in Nodu Village, Awka, Anambra State. According to the prosecution, the death followed a dispute between Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr. and his father.
**Details from the Prosecution:**
The prosecution, led by Chief State Counsel Chiamaka Chukwuka, presented a compelling case to the court. The charge sheet outlined a series of events leading to the death of Ifeanyi Anizoba Snr.:
* During an altercation, Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr. allegedly pushed his father.
* The father fell and struck his head against a wall, losing consciousness.
* Instead of seeking medical assistance, the defendant allegedly left his father unattended for two days.
* He locked his father in a room, where he remained until neighbors noticed a foul odor and raised the alarm.
* Family members subsequently discovered the body.
The prosecution presented three witnesses, including a relative of the deceased, the investigating police officer, and the medical doctor who performed the autopsy. These testimonies played a vital role in establishing the sequence of events and the cause of death.
Initially without legal representation, Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr. was later assigned counsel from the Office of the Public Defender. The defense called two witnesses and maintained the defendant's innocence, denying responsibility for his father's death.
Despite the defense's arguments, Justice Chukwudi Okaa, the trial judge, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge stated that the evidence presented clearly established that the defendant's actions led to the death of his father.
“The totality of the evidence before the court established that the defendant’s actions led to the d3ath of the deceased and he is hereby sentenced to d3ath by hanging,” Justice Okaa stated.
The sentencing has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the community. The tragic loss of life and the circumstances surrounding the case serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of familial disputes and violence.
