BREAKING: Yahaya Bello Pleads Not Guilty to 16-Count Charge of Money Laundering(photos)

In a dramatic turn of events, former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of money laundering leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ¹. This development comes after Bello's repeated failure to appear in court, prompting the EFCC to file fresh charges against him.

The charges, which were filed before a federal high court in Abuja, accuse Bello of dishonestly diverting over N110 billion in public funds while serving as governor ². The allegations include claims that Bello used state treasury funds to acquire numerous properties both within Nigeria and abroad, including high-end locations in Abuja and Dubai.
The 16-count charge sheet outlines the following allegations against Bello and his co-defendants, Abdulsalami Hudu and Umar Oricha ²:
- *Counts 1-5*: Bello, Oricha, and Hudu are accused of conspiring to illegally mismanage N110,446,470,089 from the Kogi State treasury, breaching their trust.
- *Counts 6-10*: The trio allegedly used state funds to purchase properties in Abuja, including a property at No: 35 Danube Street, Maitama District, Abuja, and another at No: 2 Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Street, Asokoro, Abuja.
- *Counts 11-12*: Bello and his co-defendants allegedly used state funds to acquire properties abroad, including a property in Dubai's Burj Khalifa district.
- *Counts 13-16*: Bello is accused of controlling N677,848,000, unlawfully obtained from Bespoque Business Solutions Limited, between 2017 and 2018 in Abuja.

Bello's plea of not guilty marks the beginning of a lengthy legal battle, as the EFCC seeks to prove the allegations against him. The former governor's detention and arraignment are seen as a significant step in ensuring that politically exposed persons face justice without interference or undue protection ³.

As the trial unfolds, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the case against Bello progresses. Will he be found guilty of the allegations leveled against him, or will he be acquitted? Only time will tell.
