Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commissioned the first smart school in Abia State, marking a significant milestone in the state's education sector. The Ofali Akwu Secondary School in Ohafia Local Government Area is the beneficiary of this innovative project, facilitated by Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia federal Constituency.
Governor Otti emphasized the importance of quality education, stating that his administration has rolled out free and compulsory education at the primary and junior secondary levels. He also hinted at the possibility of extending this policy to senior secondary levels once the state's economy improves ¹.
The governor urged parents and guardians to take advantage of this new policy, warning that from January 2025, it will be a punishable offense for any parent or guardian whose ward is seen hawking goods on the streets during school hours.
The smart school is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including interactive digital screens, cameras, and digital screens that capture classroom activities. This allows students to revisit lessons at any time and enables remote participation for learners outside the school premises. The school's teachers have undergone comprehensive training to operate the new technology, with over 70 trained educators expected to serve as trainers for others.
Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, the facilitator of the project, emphasized the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. He noted that his aim is to ensure that Abia children are equipped with the basics available globally to enable them to compete confidently with their peers anywhere in the world.
The representative of the development partners, Mr. Olayomi Gbolahan, expressed happiness at being part of the initiative, which aims to bring Abia State in tune with 21st-century teaching and learning demands. The school is equipped with full ICT facilities, 24-hour solar power, and CCTV cameras, making it a model for other schools in the state.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Chief Eleanya Kalu, stakeholders from development partners, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.
Governor Otti's commitment to education is evident in his allocation of 20% of the 2024 budget to the education sector. He assured that the 2025 fiscal year will not fall short of acceptable standards, with a minimum of 20% of the budget allocated to education.
