Kwankwaso Declares January 23 as 'Betrayal Day' Over Gov Yusuf's Defection

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has declared January 23 as a 'Day of Betrayal' following the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the party. Kwankwaso made this declaration while addressing supporters in Kano, stating that the date should be permanently recorded in history to remind Nigerians of the breach of trust and political betrayal ¹ ² ³.

Governor Yusuf had formally resigned from the NNPP on January 23, citing deepening internal crises and prolonged leadership disputes within the party as reasons for his exit. He is expected to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The NNPP has described Yusuf's defection as a "cold betrayal of a sacred trust," expressing disappointment and anguish over his decision. The party's national publicity secretary, Ladipo Johnson, stated that Yusuf's action undermines the sacrifices made by party members and supporters who stood by him through political storms ⁴ ⁵.

Kwankwaso had pleaded with Governor Yusuf to remain in the opposition party, warning that handing over the mandate of the people of Kano to political rivals would be a betrayal. The defection has intensified political tensions in Kano and sparked strong reactions among NNPP supporters ¹ ².
