The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian Senate, urging lawmakers to fast-track amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking in Abuja on February 4, 2026, the faction’s spokesperson, Mohammed Jungudo, emphasized that further delays could plunge the country into another flawed electoral cycle, eroding public trust and deepening the controversies that marred the 2023 elections ¹ ².
Jungudo highlighted that the slow pace of the National Assembly in passing crucial electoral reforms sends a negative signal to Nigerians, especially as civil society groups and political stakeholders continue to demand greater transparency and credibility in the voting process. He stressed that the Senate must prioritize these amendments to prevent a repeat of past issues and to restore confidence in Nigeria’s democracy ¹ ².
The PDP’s warning comes amid growing pressure from various political actors, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has also criticized the Senate for its sluggish approach
