The Benue State Police Command has successfully repelled an attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Awanse community, Kwande Local Government Area, and rescued a woman who had been abducted. The incident occurred on February 6, 2026, around 12:40 p.m., while police operatives were conducting confidence-building patrols in the area ¹.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the attackers invaded the community, firing sporadically and abducting a woman. However, the police responded promptly, engaging the assailants and forcing them to flee, successfully rescuing the victim unharmed.
This is not the first time the Benue State Police Command has foiled such attacks. In a separate incident, the police also arrested a suspected ammunition courier in Ukum Local Government Area and recovered 117 rounds of live ammunition. The suspect was transporting the ammunition from Gbagir to Zaki-Biam when he was intercepted by the police ².
The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Police Command, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, has reassured residents of the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that all necessary measures are in place to prevent further attacks and ensure perpetrators face justice.
